Mouma Das Profile: Women’s singles and doubles table tennis

Mouma Das will compete for second time at the Olympics.

Mouma Das, 32-year-old, comes from Kolkata, capital city of West Bengal. Rio will be her second Olympics after she had represented India at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Mouma has been a key figure in the Indian table tennis scene. Das who might be making her last appearance in Olympics hopes to put up a strong performance in Brazil and end her long career by winning a medal for the country. Mouma along with the Indian women’s team won a historic gold at the 2016 World Team Table Tennis Championships in Malaysia.

Arjuna award winner holds the record for the most Commonwealth medals by an Indian paddler (17) and has taken part in the World Championships a record 15 times. She has credited her coaches for her initial success. 32-year- old player advises upcoming players is to go abroad and train although she has not participated in any European league even after getting an offer to play in Spain.

Career Highlights: Mouma won a bronze medal in the team event at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. And a silver medal in the team event and a bronze medal in the doubles event at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games. She also bagged a bronze medal in the 2001 Commonwealth Games
