Hyderabad: The Telangana government will find itself in a tricky spot if it were to order a re-exam for Eamcet medical aspirants as it would clearly go against the deadlines fixed by the Medical Council of India (MCI) for completing admissions and start of classes.
Under MCI's Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 1997, the academic session of first-year MBBS students should start on August 1.
Recently notified in January 2016 in the Gazette of India, the MCI rulebook also fixed August 31 as the deadline for admitting the last student.
"If the MCI admissions calender, especially the August 31 deadline for completing admission process, is extended beyond this date, it would attract the wrath of MCI as it has the power to declare an entire batch of medicos as illegal," said Dr K Ramesh Reddy, member, MCI.
In fact, MCI had even allotted specific dates on which the first and second round of counselling for MBBS admissions must be conducted. But the Telangana government has already gone past these dates due to uncertainty surrounding the NEET exam.
Though the rulebook says that first and second rounds of counselling must be conducted between June 25-July 5 and July 23-30 respectively, the Telangana authorities could not even complete certificate verification for Eamcet-2.
