Ludhiana: Despite identifying the two accused who allegedly shot dead Balwinder Kaur outside Alamgir gurdwara in Ludhiana, police failed to arrest them. The accused murdered Balwinder Kaur as an act of revenge as she allegedly desecrated the Guru Granth Sahib in Ghawaddi village.
"The accused have been identified and we are conducting investigations. Raids are on to nab them. Once they are arrested, we will gather more information from them," said police commissioner J S Aulakh.
Balwinder Kaur, a 47-year-old resident of Ghawaddi village, was arrested for desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib on October 19, 2015.
She had been serving at the gurdwara for more than two decades and her son Ranjit Singh was two-time president of the gurdwara committee. She allegedly desecrated the scriptures to avenge her son's removal from the post of president.
On Tuesday morning, the accused, Gurpreet Singh of Jagowal village, Malerkotla and Nihal Singh, a resident of Patiala, called Balwinder to Alamgir Sahib saying her case would be resolved.
When she reached the gurdwara at around 8am with her son Jodh Singh, one of the accused shot her dead. Both the accused were wearing round turbans at the time.
Gurpreet Singh runs a mobile recharge business and a Gatka academy and police are still trying to ascertain the details of Nihal Singh. Photographs of the accused taken from CCTV footage are with the police.
Senior officials said police are trying to ascertain if the accused are associated with some political or other outfit. Different teams of officers are working on the case under the supervision of Ludhiana police commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh and DCP Dhruman Nimbale.
