CJM orders magisterial inquiry into custodial death of Bengre
PANAJI: The chief judicial magistrate (CJM), Panaji on Wednesday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the custodial death of under-trial Ashpak Bengre at Central jail Colvale on Tuesday morning. Noted gangster Bengre who was facing trial in an attempt to murder case was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon by a fellow under-trial, Vinay Karbotkar while the former was being taken to court for hearing.
The CJM Pooja Kavelekar ordered the magisterial inquiry under Section 176 of the CrPC to be conducted by Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Mapusa.
The jail administration had processed an application before CJM after Bengre’s death on Tuesday.
Investigation of the case has been handed over to crime branch and Karbotkar, who was formally placed under arrest on Tuesday, was remanded to five-day police custody.
