Ashdod customs officials seize huge shipment of counterfeit Viagra

Customs Authority inspectors in Ashdod this week seized two million fake Viagra (erectile dysfunction) pills and 100 kilograms of anesthetics that could have been used to mix with hard drugs. They were worth a total of NIS 40 million on the black market.

When they opened the shipment, inspectors found that the smuggling attempt came from China and was declared by the importer to be “bicarbonate of soda.”

The drugs were stored in containers surrounded by 50 kilograms of bicarbonate of soda. Some of the Viagra packets were printed with the name Pfizer, the name of the manufacturer of the legitimate erectile dysfunction drug. The authorities said the shipment posed a real health danger to the public.

The smuggled goods were detected after they aroused the suspicion of customs officials using advanced technologies that have been installed at the port. It was the biggest catch in the Ashdod customs house of such drugs. The identify of the importer is known and efforts are being made to arrest him, the Customs Authority said.
