An Irish mum has issued a warning to other parents after her child was stung by a poisonous fish on a beach.

Fiona Lagan's daughter Maisie was hurt by the fish on Benone Beach in Limavady, just outside Derry, on Saturday.

She was walking on the sand when she was stung by a weever fish, which has venomous spines along its dorsal fin.

Fiona took to social media to warn other parents about the poisonous fish.

She posted on Facebook: "Just want to say a massive thank u to the life guards on Benone Beach today, they where fantastic with Maisie.

Greater Weever

"Just want to make other parents aware of these wee fish, which stung Maisie, they bury themselves in the sand, have barb stings on their back, so for now on, I'm personal going to have either wee croc shoes or plastic sandals on my kids, please share around with other people, to make everyone aware."

Fiona explained the pain her daughter was in following being stung.

She told the Belfast Telegraph: "Maisie was walking up to the car and said to her dad 'ow ow' and held her foot. She couldn't put any weight on it and started crying. By the time we got to the car, she was going berserk and in a lot of pain.

"She was really squealing and distressed that it was so sore. I went to the lifeguard station and as soon as I said to them 'She is squealing with something wrong with her foot', they said 'it's a weever fish'.

"I had never heard of it before and I didn't know anything about it.

"They took her in, treated her and put her foot into really hot water - the hot water dilutes the toxins.

"The fish like warm, shallow water, and with the warm spell and the water getting warmer, they were there."
