The Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) sleuths arrested two persons from the city for cheating thousands of persons in a chit fund scam worth Rs 16.88 crore in Odisha.

Vadodara: The Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) sleuths arrested two persons from the city for cheating thousands of persons in a chit fund scam worth Rs 16.88 crore in Odisha.
The accused duo identified as Saubhagya Samal and Nirupama Samal, promoters of company named Midas Touch Group, were arrested late on Monday night with the help of the detection of crime branch (DCB) from Gotri area.
The CBI team from Bhubaneswar took transit remand of the accused from a local court on Tuesday and took them to Odisha.
"The CBI team approached us following which we gave them all the local support to track down the accused duo. For security measures, our three police constables accompanied the CBI team that took the accused to Odisha," said city police commissioner E Radhakrishana. The duo is accused of cheating thousands of persons by promising them double amount for their investment. Saubhagya is managing director of the company and Nirupama is its director.
According to the details released by the CBI on Tuesday, case was registered against the managing director and director of the private group of companies and nine others for the alleged chit fund scam in Odisha. The accused were charged with cheating and criminal conspiracy along with Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act in 2014 on the orders of the Supreme Court.
The CBI release said that they filed a chargesheet in the case in April last year but the accused persons were absconding since 2013 after the case was registered against them by the local police. A non-bailable warrant was issued against them by the special CJM, CBI cases, Bhubaneswar.
The CBI team tracked them down to Vadodara's posh Gotri area. The city police, however, is yet to ascertain as to how long the couple was staying here. The company had ventured into a number of businesses and the CBI had even raided its offices in Bhubaneswar earlier.
