KOLKATA: A 35-year-old woman has been arrested from Swarupnagar in North 24-Parganas while attempting to cross over the Indo-Bangladesh border on a scooty with nearly 9 kg of silver ornaments valued at Rs 3,04, 893. Her 13-year-old son was also with her.
“Around 4.45 pm on Monday, Border Security Force troops of the 76Bn posted at BOP Hakimpur received intelligence inputs of an attempt to smuggle out silver ornaments.
Before long, the woman was seen riding her scooty towards the border. She was stopped and searched by women BSF personnel and 8.889 kg of silver ornaments were seized. The woman has been identified as Rakiba Dalal (35) of Uttarpara Hakimpur village in Swarupnagar. The seized silver has been handed over to the customs office in Tetuliya,” a senior BSF official said.
In 2016, the BSF’s South Bengal Frontier has seized 77.113 kg silver valued at Rs 25,37,564. Three Bangladeshis and four Indian nationals have been nabbed so far for attempting to smuggle silver across the international border.
