SDM inquiry ordered into custodial death of Bengre: Goa CM

PANAJI: Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar told Goa Legislative Assembly on Tuesday that Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM) Mapusa has been asked to inquire into the custodial death of Ashpak Bengre .
Under-trial gangster Bengre was attacked by a fellow jail mate with a sharp weapon in the morning. Parsekar said Bengre was immediately taken to the district hospital, Mapusa but doctors declared him brought dead.
Making a statement on Bengre’s death before start of ‘Question Hour’, Parsekar said the attack on Bengre was unfortunate.
He has asked SDM to conduct inquiry and submit report.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai demanded that the House should discuss the issue threadbare and criticized the government, saying people are not safe even in the jails.
Questioning about the security of the Central jail, Fatorda MLA said Inspector General of Prison (IGP) Elvis Gomes is not interested in administration of the Central Jail.
Gomes has served a notice seeking voluntary retirement, he pointed out. Sardesai also drew attention of the House that all’s not well in the Central Jail. A local newspaper in its last Sunday edition had reported that some inmates had a party in the prison, he said.
