ctivists from the Center for Orangutan Protection (COP) staged a rally at the Bantul Prosecutor’s Office in Yogyakarta on Monday, calling on the prosecutors to demand severe sentences for those involved in the trade in protected animals.
The rally was staged in relation to the case involving civil servant Hendrik Tri Setiawan, who is accused of trading in protected animals and whose sentence demand was expected on Tuesday,
“There will be a sentence demand tomorrow. We ask the state prosecutors to demand the maximum sentence to have a deterrent effect,” Orangutan Friend Yogyakarta coordinator Destya Suci said on Monday.
Hendrik is charged with the illegal purchase of a sun bear, a protected animal. He allegedly bought the animal for Rp 6.5 million (US$495). Hendrik was arrested at the Mangkang Zoo in Semarang, Central Java.
His case is being heard in Bantul because it is connected to an earlier animal-trading case in Bantul, which saw Muhammad Zulfan sentenced to nine months in jail.
