Hearing deferred over meat sample
Case pending with the fast track court.
Greater Noida: The hearing in the Mohammad Akhlaq lynching case has been deferred to August 1.
A fast-track court in Surajpur pushed back the hearing on Monday after the accused's lawyer asked for time for filing objections to an application filed by Akhlaq's family to see the meat sample recovered from near the tri-junction of their house.
Akhlaq was lynched by a mob in Bisada village in Dadri on the suspicion that he had consumed and stored beef, last September.
A two-page report, dated October 3, 2015, and attributed to the joint director of the Mathura forensic investigation laboratory, said that the meat sample tested "belongs to cow or its progeny".
In its application on July 19, Akhlaq's family had asked the judge to allow them to see the rest of the meat sample recovered from near their house.
Ram Sharan Nagar, counsel for the accused, said that in earlier hearings, the other party had filed an application regarding the meat sample recovered from Akhlaq's house. "We have now sought time to submit our objections to the same. The court has accepted our request and deferred the case till August 1," he added.
The counsel for Akhlaq's family, Yusuf Saifi, said, "The police team recovered around 2 kg of meat and only a part of it was sent to the laboratory in Mathura. We want to know where the rest of the meat is kept at present. We have requested the court to allow it to be measured and also allow us to inspect the rest of the sample taken from the spot."
