In a case of honour killing, the family members and relatives of a married woman of Arlabanda village in Kosigi in Kurnool district strangled her and dumped her body in a reservoir. Twelve family members and relatives of the deceased were arrested. She was made to marry her lover by village elders after her legally wedded husband rejected her.

Majjiga Krishnaveni, 18, of Arlabanda, was married to Prabhakar of Chirtanakallu village four months back. When Prabhakar noticed Boya Eeranna’s name tattooed on her right hand, she disclosed her love affair with him before marriage, according to Adoni DSP Kolli Srinivasulu.

Village panchayat

On Prabhakar’s request, the village elders conducted a panchayat in which the woman expressed her desire to marry Eeranna and Prabhakar announced that he was divorcing her. The vilage elders then performed the marriage of Krishnaveni with Eeranna on June 30, the DSP said.

Peeved at the developments that unfolded, Krishnaveni’s family members hatched a plan to kill her. They asked her to meet them near Sri Anjaneyaswamy temple at Kamandoddi. When she went there, they strangled her with her saree and dumped the body in Moogaladoddi reservoir by tying a boulder to it.

Thereafter, her family members complained to the police on July 5 expressing suspicion at Eeranna and launched a search in nearby areas. Four days later, the body came afloat in the reservoir.

Kosigi Circle Inspector Kambhagiri Ramudu and Sub-Inspector Imtiyaz Basha undertook the investigation and nabbed Krishnaveni’s family members based on her mobile call data and questioning of suspects.

Police arrested Majjiga Basavaraju, Maggija Yella Reddy, Majjiga Hanmanthu, Majjiga Parvathamma, Majjiga Hussaini, Majjiga Pedda Narasappa, Majjiga Chinna Eeranna, Majjiga Ramanjaneyulu, Majjiga Hanumanthu Reddy, Kasula Mahadeva and Kakammagari Mahadeva, all family members and relatives of the deceased.
