A winner in theory: Gowtham Amirthya S N

How city student Gowtham S.N. won gold at the International Physics Olympiad

Gowtham Amirthya S.N., student of Sri Chaitanya School, struck gold at the 47th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), held in Zurich, Switzerland earlier this month. He was among five Indian students who were selected to represent India at the prestigious Olympiad. The Indian team as a whole performed very well, they got three gold and two silver medals. Hailing from Erode in Tamil Nadu, Gowtham moved to Hyderabad for his studies.

“Participating in such events makes you realise what you are capable of and you can truly achieve your dreams too if you are working hard. Last year also I had participated but got silver. This year, I trained and studied harder to get the elusive gold,” says Gowtham. Gowtham’s love for physics helped him prepare for the competition. “The fact that physics is the basis of all formations in the world makes me curious. It motivates me to delve deep in to the subject,” explains Gowtham, who also enjoys reading books and listening to music.

He adds that he enjoys participating in such competitions since he gets to interact with people from various backgrounds. “There were around 398 students participating from 84 countries. We were initially screened through a three-stage process — first, one has to clear a nationwide physics examination where thousands of students take part. Next two stages are a series of hour’s long tests comprising of theoretical and practical. The selected few undergo intense training from Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, a centre for training students appearing in all science Olympiads,” says Gowtham. Gowtham is now looking forward to going to Hong Kong for his higher studies in theoretical research in physics.
