NMP moves a gear towards ensuring ease of doing business
MANGALURU: In line with union government’s policy on ‘ease of doing business in ports’, New Mangalore Port Trust has taken up various steps to implement the concept of ease of doing business it’s day-to-day affairs. In this connection, NMPT has drawn up plans to set up a testing lab for edible items on the port premises itself so that importer/exporters of edible goods can get clearance here itself rather than go to Mysuru as was the case earlier.
P C Parida, chairman, NMPT said, “Setting up of testing lab for edible oil, chemicals and food grade items is one of the major initiatives taken up by the port trust with regard to ease of doing business.
This, Parida said, has been implemented by opening a collection centre at NMP. M/s Robust Materials Technology Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru – a National Accredited Board for Testing and Calibration Lab has opened this collection centre in line with the initiative.
The first sample was drawn for M V Prosperity which called at the Port for unloading imported crude palm oil. Above vessel availed advantage of utilizing above facility for first time in NMP. Samples were collected and tested within 1-1/2-days instead of 7-9 days taken earlier to get results from Mysuru. This facility will benefit importers/exporters of food grade items, edible goods, chemicals and in terms of time/cost and will boost edible goods traffic through the Port.
Another major step in this ease of doing business direction is opening of full-fledged Port Health Office (PHO) on the port premises which will be functional very soon. This will immensely help the embarkation/disembarkation of cruise tourists at the port. This step will encourage cruise tourism in Mangaluru. PHO established in 1942 ensures prevention of entry of quarantinable diseases (Diseases subjected to International Health Regulations) into the country.
The Port has awarded work of implementing RFID based gate automation to M/s CMS Computers Ltd which is expected to be operational by November. This will pave way for switching over to electronic transactions and ease out congestion at the gates. Direct port delivery to all ACP clients and introduction of issuing e-delivery orders are other initiatives. Once all these are implemented, trade will benefit in terms of time and efficiency and contribute to reduction in cost.
