KOLKATA: In their continuing efforts to curb terror, the Army and Assam Police neutralized two hardcore National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) militants in the Kokrajhar district of Assam in the early hours of Monday. Arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot where the militants opened fire on the security forces. It is being suspected that the militants were planning to carry out strikes in the run up to Independence Day.

“The joint team received information of some militants moving towards Jharbari area in Kokrajhar early on Monday. An operation was launched immediately. When the patrol party reached the spot, they were fired upon. The militants fired on the security personnel indiscriminately. The Army and police personnel retaliated in a controlled manner and neutralized two militants identified as Pungkha Narzary and Jwngsr Basumatary. Both belonged to the 42 Batch of the NDFB (S) and were involved in numerous subversive activities including extortion and kidnapping. They were planning to target security forces camps and convoys before Independence Day,” said Lt Col Suneet Newton, Army spokesperson in Guwahati.
Two pistols, some ammunition, two hand grenades and other warlike stores were recovered from the spot where the militants had laid an ambush for the security personnel. According to Newton, the Army has been maintaining a very high tempo of operations despite heavy rains and floods in the area.
“Great difficulty in operating in such adverse weather conditions has not deterred the Army from maintaining peace and security of the land. This operation is a serious blow to the NDFB (S) and will go a long way in enhancing the safety of civilians who have long been harassed by the militants,” the Army spokesperson added.
