After horrifying videos of cruelty against dogs came to light from Chennai and Hyderabad last month, a story of compassion that ended in heartbreak emerged from Sudhar in Ludhiana.

Tuffy was found with crushed legs outside a temple on July 8 in Sudhar. “We took him to Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU). The veterinarians said that his chance of survival was slim as he had lost a lot of blood,” said Shital Prakash, a resident who drove 30 kms to the university. “They suggested euthanasia to save him the pain but we did not have the heart to go through with it. We felt we had to do everything to save him.”

Veterinarians then suggested a blood transfusion as an immediate measure but it would take some time before a dog with matching blood type could be found. Till that time, Prakash kept Tuffy at his place and cared for it. The latest blood reports showed that Tuffy’s hemoglobin had reduced to 2 gms only against required 10-12 gms.

Even a contraption was fashioned for the dog to help it walk around. The structure with wheels helped Tuffy in movement and reduced stress off its injured legs. By then a matching blood donor was found and a transfusion was scheduled for Sunday. However tragedy struck that morning.

“I checked Tuffy to give him daily medicines and take him for blood transfusion but he was no more,” said Prakash.

Festive offer

Tuffy was buried near Sudhar canal and saplings were planted in his memory. “We knew it was difficult to save him but in no way we could leave him there on the roadside. At least we tried,” said Prakash and his friend Ramandeep. “Hope he found some love in his last days.”
