MALAPPURAM: Even as many keep themselves away from anti-diphtherial vaccination drive, people of two wards of Malappuram municipality show the way forward in immunisation.
As many as 905 people of Moonnampadi (11) and Kavungal (12) wards of municipality, in above 16 category, have taken TD vaccines on Sunday, in a special drive organised by the health department.
All children of both wards are already vaccinated as part of the drives organised in schools during last weeks.
The programme with an aim of achieving 100% vaccination in both wards, was launched with the support of health department in Malappuram. The campaign was officially launched at a function organised at MSP LP School in Malappuram Town. The health officials of Government Taluk Hospital are part of the programme.
A team led by deputy district medical officer of Malappuram, Dr Shibulal had conducted a detailed awareness class in Moonnampadi and Kavungal two weeks ago and social organisations in the region also associated with the programme by organising awareness classes.
Shasikumar K V, member of Kavungal ward of municipality, said that a joint team of health and municipality officials visited all houses of both wards on Sunday and all people took vaccination without any opposition. "The vaccination coverage is now more than 95%, as only a small section of people who are suffering from health issues stayed away from vaccination during the drive. We will also conduct a survey to assess the immunisation coverage in two wards, in the coming days," he said.
The chairperson of municipality C H Jameela said that the programme is a model initiative that can be implemented in other wards also.
