The spate of fatal attacks on the elderly in the Capital seems to be continuing with a 62-year-old woman being battered to death at her home in South Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar late on Sunday afternoon.

Robbery as motive

Prima facie, robbery appears to be the primary motive behind the murder as Rs. 10 lakh cash and some gold jewellery was found missing.

The deceased, Vimla Ahuja, owns a shop in Lajpat Nagar’s Central Market. She lived on the first floor of the house while her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter lived on the second floor.

Her son and his family were at home when the woman was murdered. The crime came to light around 4 p.m. when her son came downstairs to meet her.

He found his mother lying lifeless near the kitchen with severe wounds on the head. The police suspect that she was hit with a heavy object, possibly an iron rod.

A murder case has been registered into the matter. A senior police officer said that initial probe has indicated that the killers gained a friendly entry into the house. Though robbery seems to be a possible motive, the house was not ransacked.

Swift operation

Moreover, the killers appear to have swiftly carried out their operation. Senior investigators say that the killers did not stay in the house for more than 10 minutes. Though Ahuja’s family were in the house all through, they did not hear anything.

CCTV footage from near the victim’s house is being scanned. “We have some vital clues and are close to nabbing the culprits,” said a senior officer.
