Minister of State for Mines and Geology Vinay Kulkarni, who is also in charge of the district, has said that he will convene a meeting of officials of the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) on Tuesday to discuss the condition of roads in the twin cities.

He told presspersons on the sidelines of a function here on Saturday that most of the roads had been in a bad shape due to incessant rain and works undertaken by various agencies. Potholes had been causing problems to the commuters. The meeting would discuss these issues and pot filling work would begin soon. “There are complaints that the HDMC is not taking up development works on expected lines. A committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner will be formed to study whether the officials are facing any technical hurdles in executing works. Moreover, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. and Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board officials too have been told time and again to restore the roads after digging them for laying new cables and water pipelines. The issue will be brought to their notice again. We will see to it that the roads in Hubballi and Dharwad are developed in a fortnight,” The Minister said.

Mr. Kulkarni said that the Union government had cut down funds for the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan and the State government was finding it difficult to release grants for renovation of government schools. A few schools in Navalgund and Kundgol were in a dilapidated condition and there was an urgent need to renovate them. The Deputy Director of Public Instruction and the Block Education Officer would be asked to give a list of schools which were in a bad shape and the matter would be brought to the notice of the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education.

Car purchase

Answering a query on the car purchased by Dharwad Zilla Panchayat president Chaitra Shirur, Mr. Kulkarni said that she had not brought this issue to his notice. But, he promised that he would get a new car for Ms. Chaitra from the government if she submitted an appeal, the Minister added.
