Golfers brave scorching sun as handicap 17 Nyambogo wins Standard Classic tourney at Nyanza Club

A couple of birdies, seven pars and a single bogey was all Wycliffe Nyambogo needed to clinch the Overall Winners' prize in the Standard County Golf Classic tournament played at the par-70 Nyanza Golf Club over the weekend.

Playing off handicap 17, Nyambogo carded 19 Stableford points on the outward nines and summed it up with 22 Stableford points to amass a total of 41 during the daylong tourney.

An ecstatic Nyambogo expressed his joy by dancing his way to the podium to receive his prize moments before being joined by his father Lucas Nyambogo, a senior golfer and the oldest member of the club.

The Standard tournament, which was being played on the Nyanza course for the fifth year in a row, saw golfers from Mumias, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisii, Nakuru and Golf Park brave the scorching sun to play on the hard course.

Handicap 26 Dillu Patel was the Men's winner, posting 20 Stableford points on the outward nines and 18 on the inward nines for a total of 38 Stableford points.

Sharad Somai, playing off handicap 28, took the Men's second prize on a score of 37 after carding 21 points on the outward nines and topping it up with 16 Stableford points on the inward nines.

 

GROSS WINNER

The Men's third prize went to Ramesh Karia playing off handicap 18, after he posted 19 Stableford points on the outward nine and 17 Stableford points on the inward nines for a total of 36.

And handicap 9 Gregory Ombito was the Gross winner after posting 39 on the outward nines and adding 41 more on the inward nines for 89 gross points.

The Ladies' winner was Rosemary Obara, playing off handicap 17, after returning 17 Stableford points on the outward nines and 14 Stableford points on the inward nines for a total of 31. The second Ladies' prize went to Elizabeth Wambi playing off handicap 35, who posted 18 Stableford points on the outward nines and 13 Stableford points on the inward nines for a total of 31 points.

Mumias Golf Club Captain Charles Kimiti was the Guest winner on a score of 35; second Guest prize went to Steven Sirisaga playing off handicap 24, who posted a total of 21 Stableford points.

Standard Group Chief Operating Officer and Finance Director Orlando Lyomu, playing off handicap 26, returned a score of 20 Stableford points on the outward nines and 9 Stableford points on the inward nines for a total of 29 Stableford points to bag the Staff prize.

Handicap 10 Paul Otieno won the 1st Nine prize on 19 Stableford points as Sam Onyango, the immediate former captain of Nyanza Golf Club, took the 2nd Nine prize on 18 Stableford points. The Longest Drive (men) prize went to handicap 13 Daniel Ajulu while Obara won the Longest Drive prize in the ladies' category.

Bhupen Shah, playing off handicap 21, dropped his tee shot 15 inches from the pin on hole 13 to claim the Nearest to the Pin prize.
