Total number of customers receiving the green bill has recently exceeded 700,000, announced the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).
The number represented 97 per cent of DEWA's customers as of June 30, 2016.
According to HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, the transformation from paper bill to the electronic version has helped DEWA eliminate over 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions from October 2012 to May 2016.
DEWA announced the initial launch of the Green Bill in July 2012 to enhance its efforts to protect the environment and promote sustainability.
The Green Bill is an electronic version of the regular paper bill, which customers will receive through monthly emails.
Al Tayer stated that the Green Bill was aimed at reducing paper use, which is a fundamental step towards keeping trees, preserving environment, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions that cause global warming.
The initiative was implemented in four phases until it became mandatory to all customers to use the Green Bill. DEWA then launched the (Ashal) service, to help customers to register for the service.
It allows customers to access the bill, monitor consumption, and pay their bills online.
The Green Bill is sent as soon as it is issued and customers can access archives of monthly bills and amounts paid electronically.
