Ahmedabad: A 23-year-old youth from Mehsana, Pavan Chaudhari, was supposed to fly to Canada for higher studies in pharmacy, but his dreams went unfulfilled as he died in an accident last Saturday. To keep his memory alive, his family decided to donate his organs, one kidney, liver and both his eyes.
Chaudhari was brain dead when he was taken to our hospital.
We convinced his relatives to donate his organs and accordingly, a kidney, liver and both his eyes were donated to patients, said Dr Dhiren Shaah, a city-based cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon.
"The kidney transplant was performed at a city-based private hospital, and his liver was also donated to a patient in need. His eyes were donated to a private eye bank in the city," Shah said.
"There is a significant need for organ donation and it is encouraging to see awareness among people. More are coming forth to donate the organs of their loved ones. A single accident managed to save four precious lives and this is something needed in a country like India," Shah said.
"The gap in demand and supply is too wide. In this case, the patient was declared brain dead after a series of tests and the evaluation for brain stem death was done according to er standard protocols," Shah added.
