Hubballi: Taking cognizance of studies that prove diagrams, maps and various other forms of illustration enhance memory among students, the district administration in Koppal has launched 'One Diagram Per Day' programme with an eye on improving its SSLC results.
What is more, in an indication of the district administration's acquaintance with technology, the programme will be monitored using WhatsApp.

Koppal zilla panchayat CEO R Ramachandran told STOI that the system had been in practice for the past one year at the high school in Bhanapur in Yelburga taluk. "Teachers at the school ensured that students drew diagrams and maps on the blackboard every day and this saw the institution achieve 100% result in general science. The success encouraged us to instruct all government high schools in the district to follow it," he added.
"Sakshara Koppal", a WhatsApp group with headmasters of all government high schools and district-level officials, has also been formed. "Headmasters share photographs of diagrams drawn by students and details of the special activities at their schools. They will be inspired to do much more if their efforts draw appreciation from district officials. Nobody in the group has uploaded unrelated messages or photographs. Although a headmaster uploaded an unrelated message when the group had just started, we objected to it asking him to maintain the decorum of the group and he immediately apologized," said Ramachandran.
The headmaster of the Government High School in Bhanapur, Sharanappa Kadi said, "We have formed 12 groups of four students to draw diagrams, maps and sketches related to Kannada, general science, social science and mathematics. They are assigned drawings and diagrams the previous day so that they can come prepared the next day. We have 47 students studying SSLC and 16 students are involved in the drawing activity every day. We even provide them with colour chalk pieces. Once the diagrams are drawn, others can see them during lunch and short breaks."

He added that there were plans of extending the activity to students from eighth and ninth standard for 1-2 days in a week.
Chetan, Amrutha and Vijayalakshmi Hiremath - students at the Bhanapur School - said that the activity had helped them memorize the subject matter of the pertaining topics. "We are confident of tackling questions based on these topics. The initiative has eradicated fear of the exam in us," they said.
DDPI A Shyamsundar said government high schools responded positively to the order instructing them to follow the system.
