Guwahati: Speaking at the first convention of the Seemanta Chetana Manch here on Saturday, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal urged the people in the India-Bangladesh border areas to be alert and play an active role in stopping illegal migrants.
"Sealing the border has been our prime agenda. We want to seal the international border. The Centre wants to do the same for the safety and security of our land.
The people living in the bordering eight districts have to be sensitized to their responsibility," Sonowal said.
At a time when terrorist activities are on the rise in neighbouring Bangladesh, the Centre will do its best to seal the border soon. "We have appealed to the Centre to accord the eastern border of the country, alongside Bangladesh, and the western border, alongside Pakistan, equal importance. It has been a long-standing demand of the people of Assam," Sonowal added.
On the 70-kilometre border area which falls on water, the CM said special measures will be adopted to fence the area.
