Koraput: Cases of cholera were detected on Saturday in two of the five stool samples collected from Pidua village under Kalyansinghpur block in Rayagada district and tested at the field unit laboratory of Regional Medial Research Centre in Rayagada.
"We had collected 13 water samples and five stool samples. While water samples were found to be normal, stool samples of two patients have been found to be containing Vibrio Cholerae.
There is no need to panic as no new cases have emerged and the administration has taken all necessary measures to prevent spread of the disease," said ADMO (Hospital) S P Padhi.
Over 50 people, including eight on Saturday, have been affected by the water-borne disease in past week in Kalyansinghpur block, while three of them have succumbed to the disease. The official figure, however, is still at one.
Padhi said a treatment camp has been opened at Pidua village where the villagers are being treated. Serious patients are being shifted to Kalyansinghpur hospital.
"A health team is campaigning at the village and the villagers are being examined. Officials through a door-to-door campaigning are sensitizing the villagers to drink boiled water, wash hands properly with soap prior to eating and medicines are being distributed among villagers," said Padhi.
The water bodies in and around the village are being cleaned, while ORS is being distributed among villagers.
Sources said a 30-year-old woman, Hemabati Hikaka, died in Pongli village due to diarrhoea on Saturday. However, the ADMO said he was yet to receive any report.
