Varanasi: Railway Board chairman AK Mittal said that currently there is no plan to run bullet train originating from Varanasi. There is only one sanctioned high speed train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad for which work is in progress, he said.
"In fact there is no term like bullet train in Indian Railways. We are working on high speed train, and currently only one high speed train has been sanctioned from Mumbai to Ahmedabad," said Mittal when asked about the operation of bullet train from the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The high speed trains in India run above the speed of 150km/hr.
Mittal was here on Saturday to take stock of development projects at different railway stations. Talking to reporters at Varanasi Cantonment railway station, he said that major emphasis is being given to enhance the passenger amenities. The work is on to develop satellite terminals at Varanasi City and Maduadih railway stations to reduce the existing load on Varanasi Cantonment station, he said adding that there was need of more trains through Varanasi cantonment station in view of increasing passenger pressure.
He said coaching depots are being developed at Maduadih and Varanasi City stations. In next one year two escalators will be constructed on each platform of Cantonment station, and the work on two escalators at Maduadih station will complete by September this year, he said.
During his visit, Mittal visited Diesel Locomotive Works, divisional hospital and cancer hospital of North Eastern Railway.
