Kanpur: The flow is fast and furious. With the continuous increase in the level of Ganga, danger looms large over the low-lying villages of Katri region bordering Shuklaganj. At Ganga barrage, the water has crossed 113-metre mark and is inching towards the danger mark. At barrage, the warning mark is 113 metres. In the downstream, the river is flowing at 113.12 metres.
In the upstream, the river had touched 113.50-metre mark.
Huge quantities of water is being discharged daily from Narora dam and Haridwar. The Ganga has reached close to the Katri villages. This has worried the villagers.
If the level rises further, Chainpurwa and Devnipurwa would hit first. The administration has formed flood camps.
All the 30 gates of the barrage have been opened to allow the flow of water. The river has flooded the ghats and Jajmau from where the Ganga leaves the city. On Saturday, 2.82 lakh cusecs of water was released in the downstream. This water is expected to reach Allahabad in next three days.
At Bithoor situated in the upstream, the ghats are flooded. Brahma Ki Khuti situated at Bithoor ghat has submerged.
The situation is under control. As much as 87,978 cusecs of water was released from Narora dam on Saturday and 56,084 cusecs was discharged from Haridwar. The water discharged from Narora dam would reach the city in next three days.
At Parmat, Sarsiyya and Massacre ghats, people are flocking to see the flooded Ganga. Till a month back, these ghats were dry and the sandbed was visible. But now, he flow is fast and furious.
The boatmen and the fishermen are also exercising caution while venturing in the river.
