The foundation for a second runway at the Kempegowda International Airport will be laid in January 2017, said Industries Minister R V Deshpande on Saturday.

Addressing the media, Deshpande also said work on the second terminal too would be initiated next year. The KIA has handled 18.97 million passengers in 2015-16 and a second runway and terminal are imperative. The design work of the terminal is under way and the project will be completed by 2020, he said.

Deshpande said the tender process for the Devanahalli Business Park would be initiated in November, and the government is drawing up a master plan. Consortium of Stantec Consulting Pvt Ltd, Ahmedabad, and Jones Lang Lasalle Property Consultants (India) Pvt Ltd, Ahmedabad, have been appointed consultants for the project, which will be developed adjacent to the KIA. The benchmarking and market studies have been completed, based on which the ‘Mixed Use (MICE, Design and Culture, Entertainment)’ theme has been selected.

The project is being developed on 408 acres, of which 35 acres have been set aside for the Bengaluru International Convention Centre.
