Turkey Promises Fair Trial for All Soldiers Linked to Military Coup Attempt
ROME (Sputnik) — Recently, Turkey introduced a 1.5-month state of emergency and suspended the European Convention on Human Rights. About 10,000 people were jailed in the country, tens of thousands of government employees, including judges, civil servants and educators, were fired. Turkish leadership has floated the idea of re-introducing the death penalty to punish the coup supporters.

"We firmly say to Turkish Government, and it is because our close relations with Turkey, historically developed during [the rule of Romano] Prodi and [Silvio] Berlusconi, that by sending professors and journalists in a jail, it [the government] sends in a jail its future," Renzi said during the Italian Democratic Party assembly in Rome.

The coup attempt took place in Turkey on July 15 and was suppressed by the following day. Some 290 people were killed and around 1,500 injured during the failed coup, according to the country's authorities.
