BHUBANESWAR: A Ghaziabad court on Saturday granted four days transit remand to vigilance to bring senior Tripura cadre Odia IPS officer Joydeep Nayak. He was by the vigilance from Ghaziabad. He was wanted by the anti-corruption wing for allegedly misappropriating government funds to the tune of Rs 88 lakh.
Upon brining him to Odisha, he will be produced here in the vigilance court.
“The transit remand has been granted. We will interrogate him further to get more information on the defalcation,” director and DG, vigilance R P Sharma told TOI on Saturday.
A special team of the anti-corruption wing had travelled to Ghaziabada for the arrest. The arrest move came after the High Court rejected his anticipatory bail application applied on June 27.
The IG-rank 1991 batch officer was wanted after the vigilance registered a case against him for the fraud in third week of June. He was on the run since then. The Tripura government last month suspended him for long unauthorized leave.
Official sources said the officer was involved in the fraud during his deputation to Odisha last year. He was IG of SC/ST Protection Cell and Human Right Protection Cell here till December, 2015. He allegedly connived with five other employees to commit the misappropriation. They were arrested earlier.
According to the vigilance, Nayak got the funds sanctioned from the SC/ST department for promotion of computer literacy among SC/ST students in the coastal region. A fund of Rs 88 lakh was allocated and credited to his official bank account.

Vigilance sources said the fund was transferred to a private firm two days later. “The work was given to the private firm without floating any tender, which is in violation of official procedure. For the particular work, forged bills were also submitted,” a senior officer of vigilance said.
The arrest of Nayak (after rejection of anticipatory bail) was delayed because the officer was being treated a Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi.
