Mario Gotze will get back to his best at Borussia Dortmund - Watzke

Borussia Dortmund's general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke expects Mario Gotze to get back to his best following his return to the club.

Gotze, 24, left Dortmund for Bayern in 2013 but after making promising strides during his first two campaigns in Bavaria, injuries curtailed his playing time last season and he was allowed to leave.

But Watzke is confident the Germany international, who scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, can rediscover the instinct that made him a favourite in the first place.

"We're convinced that our coach will get Mario back to the level he was once at," Watzke told Bild. "In Munich, Mario started to think a bit too much about his football and that certainly saw some of his natural instinctiveness disappear."

Gotze was given a hostile welcome on his first return to the Westfalenstadion after moving to Bayern, with many Dortmund fans feeling betrayed by his decision to move to their arch-rivals, but Watzke is not concerned about the sort of reception the attacking midfielder will be given by fans.

"Of course we have noticed that some fans are not happy about his return," Watzke said. "But the majority are happy. And Mario is intent on showing what he can do, particularly to his critics."
