Accra, July 21, GNA - The Ghana Cricket Association (GCA) has held a seminar for Sports Journalists aimed at equipping them on the terminologies of the game to help create awareness and promote the discipline in the country in Accra.

The seminar was attended by the Operations Manager of the association, Mr. Henry B. Ackom, the vice president of the association, Mr Kwame Asare and other executive board members, who shared with journalists the role of the media in promoting the sport.

The Vice president of the GCA Mr. Kwame Asare took journalists through the terminologies, the way it is played and how to report on cricket.

Mr Asare said the association is committed to develop cricket in the country and disabused the perception that cricket is a new discipline, saying that, ''Cricket is as old as football''.

'We have been to many places and communities except the Upper West and Upper East. In communities and schools we have been organizing events and creating awareness about the game.

'We are trying to build a culture of cricket in our communities. We have been to places and school, including the Akuapem School for the blind. That's why we organized this seminar so that the media can help popularize the game with the right reportage'' he told the GNA Sports.

The Vice president said cricket can also be played by the blind and encouraged the general public to develop interest in cricket.

The Executive member of the Association, Mr. James Morgan highlighted on the role of the media in promoting cricket and other lesser known sports in the country.

"We need the media to report on cricket. There has been a bias against cricket in the country" and called on all media houses to work hand in hand with the association to promote the sport in the country.

"Don't let today's be the last day but work hard to ensure that cricket moves forward in the country."

The President, Mr. Ackom, said the association would be organising a cricket match between Adisadel School and Mfantsipim School in Cape coast on Saturday, June 23.

He also announced the upcoming ICC under 19 African Championship in Benoni, South Africa later this year.

He hinted that the Ghana under 19 cricket team is preparing towards the championship and that the team will soon travel to South Africa ahead of the competition to acclimatize and fine-tune preparations.
