IoT Evolution World Week in Review: Fiat Chrysler, AT&T, Semtech

Hello, friends. This is the IoT Evolution World Week in Review, and unholy apocalyptic hellscape, it’s been hot here in the northeast, folks. Even the A/C is asking for a vacation. But that’s enough complaining from me. Nobody likes a whiner, right?

In our lead story this week, Fiat Chrysler has issued a bounty to white hat hackers, asking them to investigate and probe its connected vehicles and code and report back any bugs and vulnerabilities found. The Italians do not want to get caught unawares again, like they did last year with the Jeep hack.

And now, the news:

It’s been an exciting week for AT&T, and as a result, the IoT. Starting with the company’s big announcement last week at the IoT Evolution Expo that it has a new CAT-M1 network on deck, the Big Bell isn’t slowing down at all, so I thought I’d bring you some highlights.

Semtech Corporation, a supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors and proponent of the LoRa IoT standard, has announced that its new LoRa geolocation solution has been integrated into a LoRaWAN-based IoT network. And that network is currently deployed over 12 square kilometers of Glasgow, Scotland, including the commercial center, Merchant City and the West End. Semtech also announced this week that its LoRa wireless RF technology will be featured in a new low power, wide area network in Japan, to be deployed by regional telecom carrier Nippon Telegraph and Telephone West (NTT West) in the Kansai area.

In a great guest column this week, Kuruvilla Mathew, chief innovation officer, Ness Digital Engineering, wrote about how the IoT and “swarm algorithms” can be used to reduce congestion on overcrowded roads all over the world.
