Bhagini Mandal district badminton: Seeds Siddhant, Arav begin in style

NAGPUR: Top seed Siddhant Bawankar and third seed Arav Fernandez started their campaign in style on the opening day of the Bhagini Mandal Sub-Junior Nagpur District Open Badminton tournament at Dhanwate National College Hall on Friday.
Last tourney's champion Siddhant hardly broke any sweat in dismissing Vedant Chichmalkar. Similarly, Arav also sailed to an easy win over Sohamm Kewalramani in the U-13 boys singles first round.Other fancied players in the same category Yugandhar Deo and Sarthak Pakhmode also advanced without much trouble. However, Jigrr Deshmukh was upset by Raghav Voditel in three games. Raghav lost the first game but staged a superb recovery to post an 11-15, 15-8, 15-12 win to enter the second round.
In the U-13 girls singles, seeded players had byes in the first round. Anika Payasi, Samira Upadhye and Janhavi Khare recorded hard-fought wins in three games over their respective opponents. In other matches, Pinak Rokde, Sophia Simon, Atika Nayse, Taniya Patwardhan and Vaidehi Gokhe registered straight-game wins to move up.
Atika, a student of Podar International School, also went on to win her U-15 girls singles first round. The 12-year-old Atika kept her cool to win the three-game thriller.
