Guwahati: The authorities of Kaziranga National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site, will bear the cost of treatment of Akash Orang, a seven-year-old boy who was injured when a pellet fired by a forest guard hit him recently.
On the evening of July 17, Anil Kalita, in charge of a makeshift anti-poaching camp, was chasing or 'driving' a rhino while forest guard Manas Bora was tracking it from inside the camp.
On hearing the sound of movement near the camp, Bora fired a blank round from his single-barrel gun but accidentally hit Akash. The incident occurred around 7pm.
While Bora was arrested, Kalita was suspended.
Kaziranga divisional forest officer Suvasish Das said the boy, currently admitted in Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH), was stable. Forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma met Akash in GMCH and inquired after his health.
"The forest department and the park management have taken moral responsibility for the accident. Officials of Kaziranga, the state zoo, and Kamrup East forest division are camping in GMCH to help Akash," Das said.
The incident had triggered protest by activists of Assam Tea Tribe Student's Association and other organisations.
