AFTER ALMOST five months of bureaucratic delay, the kin of the students from Abeda Inamdar College who drowned during a picnic on Murud beach are expected to get Rs 2 lakh compensation each as announced by the state government under the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
A college picnic to the beach turned into a tragedy on February 1, when 14 students drowned off the Murud beach in Raigad after they went swimming.
The incident led the Guardian Minister of Raigad, Prakash Mehta, to announce a financial aid on behalf of the Chief Minister through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. However, there was confusion in the administration on who would disburse the amount.
The Pune District Collectorate received Rs 28 lakh for the kin last month and the order with which they can disburse the compensation was received only on Thursday, stated the officials from the district administration.
Interestingly, even after the compensation amount was announced under CM’s Relief Fund, there was confusion among the Raigad and Pune district administration on who would carry out the disbursement process last month.
The incident occurred in Raigad district and the students were from Pune. While the kin followed it up from Pune, they were made to do several rounds to Raigad Collectorate too.
However, even after the financial assistance package of Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of the 14 deceased was announced, there was no intimation of the same to the Pune district administration.
