Neighbor wanted in Wash. couple's murder captured in Mexico
OSO, Wash. -- A Washington state man wanted in the murders of his former neighbors was arrested Friday in Mexico, authorities told CBS affiliate KIRO.
Investigators believe John Reed fatally shot Monique Patenaude, 46, and her husband, Patrick Shunn, 45, over a long-standing property dispute in Oso, a rural community northeast of Seattle.
Shunn and Patenaude were last seen on April 11. Detectives believe they were killed the same day.
Reed's brother Tony was initially also charged with murder in the case, but those charges were dropped last month after Tony Reed said he would plead guilty to helping his brother dispose of the couple's bodies.
Tony Reed fled with his brother to Mexico, but turned himself in at the U.S./Mexico border in May and helped detectives locate the couple's remains, in the root well of a wind-toppled fir tree 10 miles up a gravel logging road from Oso.
Details of John Reed's arrest weren't immediately available. Prosecutors and Tony Reed's attorney wouldn't tell KIRO if Reed is helping authorities locate his brother.
The brothers' parents were charged last week with first-degree rendering criminal assistance, accused of helping their sons flee.
Tony Reed is set to be sentenced August 29.
