LUDHIANA: Zonal unit of Directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI), Ludhiana has seized 6 Kgs of heroin worth Rs 30 crore from a transport carrier near Ladowal on Friday morning. Teams of the department led by additional director general, Naveen K Jain apprehended accused named Makhan Singh, resident of Amritsar who was travelling in this truck bound for Amritsar which was coming from New Delhi.
This is also one of the cases which points towards the increasing trend of reverse smuggling of drugs from other states into Punjab.
According to sources, the truck was carrying consignment of sweet potatoes and the driver wasn’t aware that Makhan was in possession of contraband. At 4am on Friday, when the truck was crossing Ludhiana, the DRI officers stopped it for checking and 6 kg heroin was found from Makhan. The accused has been arrested and the department is also investigating for whom the consignment was meant for and whether the accused belongs to any organised gang of smugglers.
It is pertinent to mention here that in one of the biggest hauls this year, DRI had undertaken a covert operation in the month of April, near Indo-Pak border at Hussainiwala and seized arms and 30.40 Kgs Heroin worth Rs 150 crores from a deserted bunker which was earlier being used by the security forces.
