Budapest, Hungary - Lewis Hamilton posted the fastest lap in the first practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix, followed by Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg.
Driving on the repaved Hungaroring with supersoft tires, Hamilton's time of 1m21.347s on Friday was nearly four seconds faster than the world champion's first practice in 2015 and almost 0.7s ahead of his 2015 qualifying pace, which put him in pole position.
Rosberg, who has extended his Mercedes contract until the end of 2018, was 0.237s behind Hamilton.
The pacesetters were followed by Ferrari duo Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, more than 1.6 seconds off Hamilton's pace. Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen of Red Bull, on soft tires, came next.
Wet patches after overnight rainfall made for a cautious start and several spins but no serious incidents. - AP
