Dibrugarh: A Myanmar-trained Ulfa (Independent) rebel Babul Dihingia alias Engineer was nabbed by security forces from Chepatoli village under Duliajan police station in Dibrugarh district on Wednesday night.
Acting on intelligence inputs, Namrup DSP Partha Bijoy Dutta led a joint operation of the police and 19 JAT regiment, resulting in the arrest of the dreaded militant.
Two hand grenades were found on Babul.
Dibrugarh additional SP Surjeet Singh Panesar, addressing a press meet here on Thursday, claimed that the 34-year-old Ulfa rebel is a close associate of top Ulfa leader Arunodoy Dohotia, entrusted by the outfit's top brass to carry out subversive activities in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts in the run up to Independence Day. Panesar added that efforts were on to nab Babul's wife Mrinali, also an Ulfa cadre, as well as three other cadres who were close to him.
