Campaign to get APJ Abdul Kalam's bio translated

1 lakh students to sign petition to be sent to Prime Minister

KOCHI: A mass petition signed by 1 lakh school students from across the country will be submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking to translate the autobiography of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam into regional languages and include portions from it in the school and college curriculum. The signatures will be collected from July 23-30.

This was revealed by Kerala CBSE School Management Association general secretary Indira Rajan and Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit Vice-Chancellor M.C. Dileep Kumar, addressing a press conference here to announce the observance of 'Kalam Smrithi', the first death anniversary of Dr Kalam on Saturday at the TDM Hall here. They also said that two national awards will be given to two persons for their contributions for innovation in the education and science fields at the function.

The names of the recipients too will be announced at the function. Kalam's relatives too will attend the function. Kalam's nephew A P J Sheikh Salim will dedicate a dance drama to be staged by 100 students of MET School, Perumbavoor, based on 'Wings of Fire' on the occasion. A total of 1,000 students who are winners in a national essay contest on Kalam will be given medals and certificates on the occasion while 40 selected from them will be given cash awards.

The function is being organised by the Vikram Sarabhai Science Initiative which will be presided over by former ISRO chief Dr G Madhavan Nair. The Kalam memorial lecture will be delivered by Rear Admiral R B Pandit. Cochin Shipyard chief Madhu S Nair will be the chief guest.
