Ahmedabad: Dholka town near Ahmedabad erupted in mob fury as a group of people protesting at the atrocities against Dalits in Una, turned violent and targeted government buildings and vehicles on Thursday afternoon. The crowd also pelted the police with stone. Till Thursday night, police had rounded up 45 people.
According to Dholka police, a dalit group carried out a rally in the town in the morning and protesters were on their way to present a memorandum to the local administration.
A few from among them started throwing stones at government buildings, including Dholka Sewa Sadan, which representatives of district the administration work.
"Police tried to control the mob and lobbed a few tear-gas shells. The mob then started pelting the police, government vehicles and private vehicles with stones. We are still to assess the damage. A bus was also targeted," said a Dholka police official.
Local women, with dishes and rolling pins, then went to the police station to protest against the detentions and demand the release of protesters. Police denied allegations that the teams went into neighbourhoods and homes to bring out the suspects.
Senior police officials said that adequate forces had been deployed in the town and nearby areas to prevent any untoward incident.
