Coimbatore: Police have intensified vehicle checks across Nilgiris district after receiving information from intelligence agencies that suspected Maoists may cross the district by road. The police at check posts were given photos of five suspected Maoists. They conducted thorough checks on Thursday from 8am to 12pm.
"We have received some information and intensified vehicle checks at 15 places in the district.
More police personnel were deployed at the two entry points of the district at Coonoor and Gudalur. We have photographs of 15 Maoist suspects and sent their photographs through Whatsapp to police personnel on duty at the check posts," said SP Murali Rambha.
Initially, the district had ten check posts in important areas including the Nilgiris -Karnataka border and Nilgiris -Kerala border. "We added five more check posts on Thursday," said Murali Rambha.
On Thursday, a message spread that five Maoists including Vikram Gowda and Anitha had infiltrated into Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts. There were some rumours that five Maoists were secured by the Coimbatore rural police. They were detained at a house in Mettupalayam on Thursday. However, they managed to escape. TNN
