Students gherao Principal

July 22, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:01 am IST - KANHANGAD:

The Students Federation of India (SFI) activists on Thursday gheraoed the Principal of Nehru Arts & Science College here for over four hours on Thursday seeking to revoke the disciplinary action against two students, who were suspended for allegedly manhandling a girl student of the college.

The group of slogan-shouting students, numbering about 50, barged into the cabin of Principal P.V. Pushpaja and staged a sit-in from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. seeking to revoke the suspension of two of their members, Arun and Ajith, for allegedly manhandling a Malayalam graduate student of the college, injuring her hand, on Wednesday.

The suspension was finally revoked after the students tendered a written apology expressing regret over the attack on the girl, Dr. Pushpaja said.

The incident was said to be a fallout of the suspension of Shibin, an SFI loyalist and a final-year Malayalam graduate student on July 18, after a few students lodged a complaint accusing him of misbehaving with teachers and a few girl students in classrooms. Ajith and Arun questioned the students, including the girl, alleging that they paved the way for Shibin’s suspension culminating in the attack on the girl.

The situation was brought back to normalcy after the disciplinary action against the two students was revoked, Dr. Pushpaja said.

Meanwhile, a group of Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists took out a march in protest against the attack.
