Chess Champion P. Iniyan, a Standard IX student of The Indian Public School, has won recognition as International Master after excelling in Sub-Junior level at the International Tournament in Spain last month.

Of the 18 competitions he took part in, 13-year-old Iniyan managed to draw four games and won in 10. Out of it, the three draws and three victories were against grand masters and international masters. Iniyan won medal for first prize at Sub-Junior level and was placed sixth in the General Category Trophy. The performance has placed him in a position to compete with grand masters in future tournaments.

The Olirum Erodu Foundation that sponsored Iniyan's trip to Barcelona and Barbera felicitated him at a recent function. OEF chairman M. Chinnasamy and secretary S. Ganesan honoured the young champion with prizes.

Prior to his departure, the cheque for the sponsored amount of R.s 2.03 lakh was handed over to Iniyan by District Collector S. Prabakar. The OEF, which has a vision to nurture two Olympians from Erode, had sponsored Iniyan’s participation in international competitions in Russia and UAE last year.
