National Geographic Channel has picked up “The Story of God with Morgan Freeman” for a second season, Variety has learned.

The Emmy-nominated series will get another three episodes, premiering in early 2017, to probe topics like, “Is there a Chosen One?” and whether one can find proof of a singular deity.

“I had quite a journey last season, but not just in miles covered,” said Freeman, who serves as both host and executive producer. “I met incredible people who opened my eyes and my mind to new ideas and new ways of thinking about faith, the world and all of humanity. I barely scratched the surface of what we can learn, and I’m looking forward to continuing this search for the meaning of life and religion and everything in between.”

Freeman is no stranger to asking big questions on TV — his series “Through the Wormhole” on Discovery’s Science Channel also attempted to tackle philosophical quandaries like “When does life begin?” But “The Story of God” appealed to him, he explained in a Variety interview earlier this year, because of his curiosity about life itself. “One of the things that surrounds life is the idea of death, and what comes with the idea of death is what comes after that,” he said. “And all of that is encapsulated in our ideas of God and religion.”

Originally billed as an “event series,” “The Story of God” was a boon for Nat Geo, quickly becoming its most-watched series over its six-episode first season.

Nat Geo will air the second season in 171 countries, in 45 languages, including a Spanish version on Nat Geo Mundo. Freeman, Lori McCreary and James Younger executive produce for Revelations Entertainment for National Geographic Channel.

For National Geographic Channel, Michael J. Miller is executive producer; Kevin Tao Mohs is vice president, production and development; and Tim Pastore is president, original programming and production.
