SUKKUR: Ghotki police arrested on Thursday eight persons for their alleged involvement in publicly beating up and humiliating a man on Wednesday in Dad Leghari town.

On Wednesday, Imamuddin Soomro, a resident of Bukhshapur Muhalla, was on his way to a market when more than a dozen men belonging to the Leghari community caught and tortured him, later forcing him to walk around the market with shoes hanging around his neck. Soomro was later handed over to the police for allegedly stealing a solar plate.

Later, Soomro and his relatives and neighbours staged a protest demonstration outside the SSP's office in Mirpur Mathelo. He told the media that he has a land dispute with Nek Muhammad Leghari, Haji Anwar Leghari and others for the past few months. Soomro alleged that he was implicated in a false case of stealing the solar plate, which is under process in court.

While he was going to the market, Nek Muhammad, Anwar Leghari, Zahid, Faiq and others attacked and beat him up and later made him walk around with shoes hanging from his neck, he alleged. In the meantime Sukkur DIG took notice of the incident and ordered the Ghotki SSP to lodge an FIR against the persons responsible and arrest them.

On Thursday morning, Soomro lodged an FIR against more than 20 men of the Leghari community, after which the Dad Leghari police arrested eight persons, including Nek Muhammad, Abdul Rasheed, Faiq Ali, Zahid Ali, Waqar Ali, Shamsher and Abdul Qadeer. An official at the Dad Leghari police station confirmed the arrests and said raids are being conducted to round up the remaining suspects.
