Swiney named head coach at Elizabethtown

Elizabethtown High School has removed the “interim” from Donnie Swiney’s title and named him head coach for its girls basketball squad.

Swiney was named interim coach last month after Tim Mudd stepped down. Mudd compiled a 563-136 record and won the state title in 1998 during his 22 seasons at E’town.

Swiney has been an assistant coach at E’town since 1997.

“It’s quite a bit of nerves and anxiety,” Swiney told the Elizabethtown (Ky.) News-Enterprise. “I’m not going to win 563 games, I’ll tell you that right now. I don’t think I’ll be coaching long enough to win 500 games. (Mudd) did it for a long time, and I’m going to keep some of the things the same and try to build on what we’ve already done. The program is what it is and he built it into what it is today as the top program in the state of Kentucky. That itself brings some nerves and anxiety, but I don’t expect staying it in for 20-some odd years.”

E’town finished 30-5 last season after falling to Butler in the quarterfinals of the state tournament.
