IN THE NEWS

Hollywood is mourning the loss of comedic legend Garry Marshall, a chief architect of the ‘70s sitcom landscape who died Tuesday night of complications from pneumonia after he suffered a stroke. He was 81. Marshall, by all accounts one of the nicest guys in Hollywood, leaves a legacy of iconic television shows, including Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Mork & Mindy. Aside from his television work, which launched the careers of Henry Winkler and Robin Williams, among others, Marshall directed 18 films, including 1990 hit Pretty Woman, Beaches, Overboard, Runaway Bride and Valentine’s Day.

The fourth season of Starz’s original series Black Sails will be the last for the Emmy-winning Treasure Island prequel. The 10-ep fourth season returns in 2017. “While it was a difficult decision for us to make this season our last, we simply couldn’t imagine anything beyond it that would make for a better ending to the story nor a more natural handoff to Treasure Island,” said series co-creator and exec producer Jonathan E. Steinberg. The first three seasons of Black Sails averaged 3.6 million multiplatform viewers per episode, according to Nielsen.

ESPN selected Minneapolis as the next US host city for the X Games. Minneapolis will host an X Games summer event for the next two years at the new, state-of-the-art U.S. Bank Stadium. The events will take place July 13-16, 2017 and July 1922, 2018.

THEMA-Alterna’TV, a Canal+ company that supplies TV content, has unveiled FIBA Americas TV, a network that will air officially sanctioned games of the Federacion Internacional de Basketball (FIBA) from the US, Canada and Latin America, to cable operators in the US and Latin America. The network marks the first time games from the Americas league will be presented in one viewing destination. It will offer 1,852 games per season, covering teams from the three zones representing 43 countries.
