Zulu family alarmed at reports that Letshego spoke out about Gugu's death

The family of Gugu Zulu has denied speaking to a journalist at the Kilimanjaro Mountain Lodge on Tuesday night.

The Star on Thursday reported that Gugu Zulu's widow, Letshego had broken her silence in a dining hall at the lodge.

Project leader for the Trek4Mandela expedition Richard Mabaso however insists that Letshego has not spoken out about the death of her husband.

Speaking to TimesLIVE from Tanzania, Zulu's sister, Liyanda, also reiterated that Letshego had not made the comments.

The paper reported that its news editor, Omphitlhetse Mooki, was at base camp when the comments were made.

“We have been together for 15-and-a-half years and not once was he ever a reason for my tears. He made me smile and he was a gentleman to the very end,” the paper quoted Letshego as saying.

The Star editor Kevin Ritchie has disputed the claims. "It's a bizarre comment from the family since the writer was actually part of the Trek 4 Mandela climb and filed directly from site."

The rally driver died on Monday morning while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro during the Trek4Mandela expedition. Zulu and his wife were among 42 trekkers who we climbing the mountain to raise funds to buy sanitary towels for disadvantaged girls.

It's understood he was experiencing breathing problems.

Zulu's sister and a friend flew to Tanzania after hearing the news. Together with the family, South African officials are working closely with Tanzanian authorities on bringing Zulu's body back to South Africa.

A public memorial service for Zulu is set to take place on 26 July at Kyalami race track in Johannesburg.
